Sleep Studies: Diagnosing Sleep Disorders for Better Health

A sleep study is a specialized test designed to diagnose sleep-related breathing disorders, seizures, and conditions like somnambulism (sleepwalking). The most effective way to detect sleep-related breathing issues is through polysomnography (PSG)—a comprehensive monitoring test that evaluates sleep patterns and disturbances.

Benefits of a Sleep Study

A sleep study is ideal for individuals experiencing chronic breathing problems, excessive daytime sleepiness, or unexplained nighttime disturbances. It helps diagnose conditions such as: Sleep Apnea Narcolepsy (Excessive Sleepiness)Seizure Disorders Periodic Limb Movement Disorder REM Sleep Behavior Disorder Chronic Insomnia Neuromuscular Sleep Disorders Parasomnias (Unusual Sleep Behaviors like Sleepwalking)

Preparing for a Sleep Study

To ensure accurate results, patients are advised to: Avoid caffeine, alcohol, or anything that could affect their sleep cycle. Refrain from daytime naps before the study. Follow normal sleep habits leading up to the test.

How a Sleep Study Works

During a polysomnography test, electrodes are placed on the scalp, temples, chest, and limbs to monitor sleep activity. These electrodes are connected to a monitor, where specialists observe and record various physiological functions, including: Brain wave activity (Sleep Cycle Monitoring)Oxygen Saturation Levels Heart Rate & Breathing Patterns Limb & Chest Movements Eye Movements. Any disruptions in these patterns may indicate conditions like sleep apnea, periodic limb movement disorder, or other respiratory and neurological sleep disturbances.

Understanding Your Results

The results of a sleep study are classified into four categories: Normal, Mild, Moderate, Severe. Based on the findings, a personalized treatment plan will be recommended to help improve sleep quality and overall health.
